Download Anything Free with Edonkey2000/ED2K

The eDonkey2000 network has become one of the largest P2P communities. The eDonkey2000 network is centralized. However, unlike Napster who kept their central servers in Silicon Valley, the developers, released their server software onto the web, and it is maintained by the community.

I guess the take-away message here it that although you may hear that the eDonkey2000 network is centralized, it cannot be shut down like Napster was. Individual servers come and go, but as a whole, the network remains intact. Personally, I find the eDonkey2000 network best for individual music files, e-books, and programs.

You need a client (fancy term for program) to access the network.

Use EMule if you have Windows.

If you've got a Mac, you can use AMule.

After you have installed it, start the program. On the right side of the screen you should see Update Server.met from URL: You need to Google "Server.met" to find one because these change places frequently. Once you have found one, cut and paste the web address into the box.

Click Update. In order to take full advantage of this network, you should maintain your server list on a weekly basis.

Now click the icon that says “Connect” at the top. After a second, you should be connected. Voila! You are ready to download. Do you see the icon at the top that says “Search?” Click that. Put something in there that you’d like to see, like Frank Sinatra. Click “Start.” You’ll see a list start growing in the bottom portion of the screen. Those are your search results. How do you know which one to pick? I give more information on that a little later. Once you have chosen your file, double click it. This will start the download. At the top of the screen, you will see an icon labeled “Transfers.” Click that to view the status of your downloads.

Once it says that your file is 100% done, you can open it. Simply right click on the file and select “open file.”

Tip: If you are wondering exactly where on your computer eMule is storing files, click “Options” at the top, then in the popup box, click “Directories.” You’ll see where the incoming files are being placed. You can put them wherever you want ONCE THEY ARE DONE downloading.
