could be stopping you? Well, there are a few things.
First, let’s
look at your internet connection. Are you behind a router
that is blocking your ports? If you have a DSL or cable modem
or a router, chances are that you are. It could be blocking
certain connections. You need to open the ports that the program
in question uses. How? Well, there are two ways.
The first is to
open all ports on your router. That’s what I do, and
I haven’t had any problems with it. The second is to
find out want ports are used by the program and open, or “forward”
those ports. There is no way that I could cover every possible
scenario for every router out there, so a great resource no
matter which way you decide to go is http://www.portforward.com.
It has instructions for most routers and programs, including
which ports to open. It’s very handy.
Now let’s
look at software. There are many software firewalls available.
The same rules apply to software. With zone alarm, you can
find the program in question and select its permissions.
As a side note,
I feel that the Windows Firewall sucks, and you should use
Zone Alarm. I would disable the Windows Firewall, because
running two at the same time causes problems. These are only
suggestions, and if something goes wrong, or you find a security
issue with your computer, I’m not responsible. On the
upside, I’ve been doing this a long time with no issues!
